About this plugin
Roland's TR-707 plugin faithfully emulates the 1985 drum machine that bridged analog warmth and digital efficiency. Using Analog Circuit Behavior technology, the plugin models the distinctive sonic signature that made the TR-707 a fixture across synth-pop, acid house, and industrial music - a machine that initially suffered from underestimation but has since been recognized as genuinely influential.
The TR-707's technical character stems from its 8-bit (6-bit for certain sounds) sample playback engine operating at 25 kHz, which introduced quantization noise and harmonic distortion during decay. Rather than attempting to remove these artifacts, the original designers embraced them, using non-decaying PCM waveforms with analog circuitry handling the decay envelope. Clock deviations and downstream analog behavior created pitch and decay variances that collectively produced the machine's prized lo-fi punch. The software recreation captures these behaviors with precision, including the subtle imperfections that define its sonic character.

For producers and engineers, the TR-707 plugin excels at delivering crisp, punchy drum tones with a distinctly vintage digital character. Its user interface combines hands-on control through individual faders with straightforward programming, making it accessible without sacrificing depth. The plugin outperforms purely sample-based drum machines for users seeking authentic '80s digital character while maintaining modern DAW integration.
Among software drum machines, the TR-707 occupies a specific niche - not as universal as the TR-909, but more characterful than generic sample playback. It remains most effective when you specifically need that particular era's aesthetic rather than maximum sonic flexibility.
