About this plugin
Rob Papen Punch 2 represents a comprehensive refinement of the original drum machine concept, positioning itself as a serious contender in the virtual percussion synthesis space. At its core, the plugin combines procedural drum sound generation with sample-based workflows, delivering both deep sonic customization and practical workflow efficiency.
The synthesis engine has expanded considerably, offering diverse drum sound design possibilities beyond typical sample libraries. The redesigned interface emphasizes quick kit construction without sacrificing depth, allowing producers to audition and modify sounds rapidly. Where Punch 2 distinguishes itself is in its flexible sample integration: REX file support and custom sample slicing enable creative layering of imported material with native synthesis, a practical advantage for producers working with loops and processed vocal hits.

The granular synthesis option applied to sliced audio or REX files opens distinctive textural possibilities, transforming rhythmic material into evolving, complex timbres. The comprehensive master section - encompassing EQ, compression, limiting, and stereo filtering alongside a layout mixer - provides professional mastering-grade tools that address mix cohesion directly within the instrument.
Punch 2 best serves producers seeking a primary drum solution that bridges synthesis-based sound design with sample manipulation. It's particularly valuable for those working with pre-recorded loops or field recordings who want integration without leaving the plugin. The pattern sequencer remains functional, though users primarily seeking sequencing power may find dedicated DAW tools sufficient.
Among contemporary drum machines, Punch 2 occupies a thoughtful middle ground between pure synthesis tools and sample-focused workstations, backed by substantial included content and genuine sonic flexibility.
