About this plugin
Softube's Reference Equalizers Bundle combines two distinctly voiced passive EQ designs that approach tonal shaping from different sonic philosophies. The 1956 model delivers classic broad-stroke coloration through a minimum-phase passive architecture, relying on discrete resistors, capacitors, and chokes rather than active circuitry. Its character leans toward thick, musical low-end presence, particularly when the Headroom control is engaged to accentuate transformer saturation. The 1998 represents a more sophisticated approach, employing four parallel passive bands with shelving filters that transition from transparent smoothing to aggressive, colorful presence peaks. Both designs include output tube stages that contribute warmth and subtle saturation inherent to their hardware inspiration.
The bundle's technical implementation modernizes these references meaningfully. Beyond the original designs, Softube added stereo capability, expanded frequency selections, and independent channel controls. The 1998 specifically benefits from flexible shelving behavior that adapts from gentle slope to pronounced character, making it equally effective for surgical corrections and dramatic tonal transformation.

These equalizers appeal to mix engineers and mastering professionals seeking musicality over clinical precision. The 1956 excels at establishing foundational tone, while the 1998 handles detailed spectral sculpting with remarkable cohesion. Neither pursues surgical EQ; instead, both prioritize the aggregate sonic impression across frequency ranges. Within the crowded landscape of modeled vintage EQs, Softube's emphasis on minimum-phase passive designs and transformer-based character distinguishes this bundle. For engineers valuing harmonic integration over isolated frequency control, these represent substantive tools that genuinely influence a mix's tonal foundation.
