About this plugin
FabFilter Pro-L 2 stands as one of the most capable limiting tools available for modern mixing and mastering work. The plugin combines transparent gain reduction with the ability to achieve competitive loudness levels, addressing the central tension that has long plagued limiter design. Rather than forcing engineers to choose between sonic integrity and maximization, Pro-L 2 delivers both through its eight distinct limiting algorithms, each voiced differently to suit specific material and mixing philosophies.
The technical foundation includes true peak limiting with up to 32x linear-phase oversampling, preventing the inter-sample peaks that can undermine mastering-grade work. The metering implementation is comprehensive: alongside traditional peak indicators, you get real-time gain reduction visualization and loudness measurement across EBU R128, ITU-R BS.1770-4, and ATSC A/85 standards. This removes guesswork from loudness-normalized delivery chains.

Pro-L 2 excels in mastering contexts where precision and transparency matter most, though mixing engineers will find the transparent algorithms equally valuable for bus compression. The surround support, including Dolby Atmos configurations, makes this a genuinely professional tool for immersive formats. Intelligent channel linking and external sidechain capability add flexibility for stem mastering and specialized applications.
Among professional limiters, Pro-L 2 occupies a middle ground between surgical precision tools and character-driven processors. Its strength lies in refusing compromise: you get both the loudness capability modern streaming demands and the sonic cleanliness that prevents audible limiting artifacts. For mastering engineers and serious mixing professionals, it remains an essential utility.
