About this plugin
The Big Distortion Engine represents a thoughtful evolution in distortion plugin design, addressing a genuine problem that has plagued mixing engineers: applying harmonic saturation without compromising dynamic range. Swivel Audio's dynamic preservation engine allows you to distort reverb tails, sustains, and ambient elements while keeping their relative volume dynamics intact - a capability that fundamentally changes how distortion can be integrated into modern production workflows.
The plugin's technical foundation rests on six distortion modes, ranging from Cherry Bomb's subtle saturation through Nuke's extreme character. What distinguishes BDE from competing tools is its frequency and mid-side control architecture, enabling targeted distortion application. Need to color only the low mids while preserving crisp highs? The band-pass filter handles this elegantly. Want dirt exclusively in the stereo sides while maintaining a clean center image? The M/S functionality delivers precision here.

Beyond distortion, BDE bundles practical utilities: bit crushing, downsampling, compression, and filtering all reside in the signal chain. The auto-leveling detection system, while seemingly basic, proves genuinely useful for quickly establishing optimal input staging without tedious manual adjustment.
BDE suits engineers working across hip-hop, rock, and electronic production where surgical control over tonal coloration matters. The dynamic preservation feature particularly appeals to mastering and mixing scenarios where you need harmonic enhancement without dynamic disruption. Among competing distortion plugins, BDE occupies a pragmatic middle ground - not as boutique-focused as some alternatives, but substantially more capable than standard saturation tools, making it a solid choice for professional workflows demanding both flexibility and transparent operation.
