About this plugin
The Shadow Hills Mastering Compressor represents one of the most influential design philosophies in modern mastering, meticulously recreated by Brainworx through detailed hardware modeling. This dual-stage compression architecture addresses a fundamental challenge in mastering: achieving transparent dynamic control without sacrificing musicality or introducing unwanted artifacts.
The plugin's core strength lies in its dual compression sections. The Optical stage operates with the gentle, frequency-dependent characteristics of tube-based compression, employing soft-knee behavior and two-stage release curves reminiscent of classic LA-2A units. This section excels at catching peaks with musical grace while managing overall levels. The Discrete VCA section offers precision control with adjustable ratio, attack, and release parameters, enabling surgical intervention on specific dynamic problems without affecting the broader tonal character.

The switchable output transformers - Steel, Nickel, and Iron - provide genuine tonal flexibility rather than superficial coloration. Nickel delivers a balanced, polished response suited to sparse, intimate material. Iron introduces subtle saturation with a modest 100Hz lift, useful for adding weight without obvious coloration. Steel provides a neutral reference point.
The Shadow Hills earned its legendary status through extensive use on platinum records across rock, alternative, and pop. Engineers value its ability to control unruly transients while maintaining punch and clarity across frequency ranges. On stereo buses, it performs with particular distinction, managing complex material without the dulling effects associated with many digital compressors.
This plugin represents the gold standard for mastering compression, essential for engineers seeking transparent, musical dynamic control.
