About this plugin
The Looptrotter SA2RATE 2 is a saturation plugin that emulates the solid-state saturation circuit found in Looptrotter's hardware summing mixers. Unlike aggressive distortion processors, it focuses on adding musicality through low-order harmonics while subtly raising overall loudness without pushing peaks. This combination makes it particularly useful for mastering and mix bus applications where transparency matters.
The plugin's architecture addresses two common saturation pitfalls. The LO Safe circuit protects low frequencies through pre and post-emphasis, preventing kick drums and bass from losing definition under saturation. The HI Smooth filter applies opposing EQ curves around the saturation stage, controlling transient aggression in cymbals and bright sources without introducing digital harshness. Both filters are tunable to match your specific material.

The Drive control manages input level and saturation depth simultaneously, with LED indicators showing THD at 4% and 8% - useful reference points for dialing in the right character. An independent wet/dry blend allows for anything from subtle coloration to full saturation, giving users precise control over how obviously the processor colors a mix.
Plugin-only additions include the Magic feature from Looptrotter's summing mixers, which claims to widen and clarify the overall image. This distinction matters for mixing engineers who already own the hardware and want consistency in the box.
The SA2RATE 2 suits mixing engineers prioritizing punch and cohesion without obvious coloration, and mastering professionals seeking gentle loudness gains alongside analog warmth. It competes directly with SSL's Fusion and Empirical Labs' Distressor in the subtle-aggression category, though its low-frequency protection gives it particular strength for rhythm-heavy material.
