Product Overview
The Black Box HG-2 MS is a mid-side saturation processor that brings the sound of the celebrated hardware unit into the digital domain with meaningful additions for mix bus and individual track processing. Built on the foundation of the original HG-2's tube emulation architecture, this version adds frequency-selective saturation through dedicated highpass, lowpass, bandpass, and bandstop filters, allowing engineers to target saturation to specific frequency ranges on each channel.
The plugin models series and parallel configurations of 6U8A pentode and triode tube stages, with independent gain controls for each type. This dual-tube approach generates both even and odd-order harmonics, giving users genuine tonal flexibility rather than a single sonic character. The Density control adds drive to both stages simultaneously while maintaining their balance and output level, effectively controlling saturation intensity without tonal shift. A calibration menu further adjusts the emulation to match various hardware unit variants.
The mid-side processing capability marks the substantive upgrade over the standard HG-2. This allows asymmetric processing - saturating sides while maintaining center clarity, or applying different harmonic colors to each channel. The plugin also includes dedicated mono and stereo buss modes, making it adaptable across various mixing scenarios.
The HG-2 MS suits mix engineers seeking transparent saturation with character, particularly those mixing in mid-side workflows or requiring frequency-specific harmonic enhancement. Its standing reflects years of adoption by recognized professionals, though results depend on judicious use rather than aggressive settings.
