About this plugin
Output's Thermal Expansion Pack builds on the foundation of its parent plugin by introducing a dual-distortion architecture that meaningfully expands creative possibilities. The expansion pairs two distinct saturation and distortion algorithms within each preset, allowing producers to stack complementary processing strategies rather than relying on serial chains. This approach proves particularly valuable when working with time-sensitive material or when exploring unconventional tonal territories where conventional distortion staging might prove cumbersome.
The dual-algorithm design accommodates both surgical and experimental workflows. Users can isolate individual distortion types via dedicated macro controls, enabling A/B comparison and transparent layering, or blend them fluidly using Output's characteristically intuitive XY Control interface. The XY pad adds tactile immediacy to parameter exploration, reducing the cognitive overhead that typically accompanies multi-stage saturation processing.

Thermal's sonic character already favored warmth and musicality over clinical clarity, and this expansion maintains that sensibility while introducing greater textural range. The plugin excels for sources requiring both definition and character - drums benefit from tight, controlled aggression while guitars and synths gain harmonic complexity. The dual-distortion approach also suits parallel compression workflows and creative bus processing, where nuanced tonal shaping yields more interesting results than traditional single-stage processing.
For producers and engineers seeking distortion tools that prioritize sonic exploration over straightforward gain staging, this expansion represents a logical and capable addition to Thermal's toolkit, offering enough sonic variety to justify integration into both mixing and sound design workflows.
