About this plugin
NUGEN Audio's ISL 2st addresses a genuine technical requirement that most producers handle inadequately: true-peak limiting for streaming and broadcast delivery. Unlike conventional peak limiters that monitor sample values, true-peak limiters detect intersample peaks that emerge during codec conversion - the primary culprit behind unexpected clipping in mp3, AAC, and other compressed formats. The ISL 2st implements multiple true-peak algorithms, including Apple's Mastered for iTunes specification, making it essential for anyone mastering content bound for Spotify, Apple Music, or broadcast.
The plugin's technical approach emphasizes transparency through intelligent processing. Rather than applying crude gain reduction across the mix, it includes frequency-aware limiting that prevents excessive attenuation when low-frequency content triggers the limiter. This distinction matters considerably on modern mixes heavy with bass content. The Steering and Ducking meters provide visual feedback about how the limiter is responding, transforming what could be opaque gain reduction into an understandable process.

ISL 2st occupies a specific niche: it's indispensable for mastering engineers delivering to multiple platforms simultaneously, essential for broadcast post-production, and genuinely useful for anyone concerned with loudness normalization standards. While competitive true-peak limiters exist, few combine true-peak detection across multiple standards with the processing refinement NUGEN has implemented here. It's neither a creative effect nor a transparent brick wall for occasional peaks - it's infrastructure, the type of plugin that prevents problems rather than solving them audibly. For professionals handling modern delivery requirements, it's become difficult to justify working without one.
