About this plugin
Articulate represents a meaningful evolution in envelope shaping technology by treating transient control with the same straightforward philosophy as multiband EQ. Rather than overwhelming users with complex attack and release curves, Newfangled Audio's approach separates audio into four distinct frequency-like bands - Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release - each controllable via simple faders. This paradigm shift makes the tool immediately accessible while remaining genuinely powerful for detailed mix work.
The plugin's dual-mode detection system proves particularly valuable. You can shape dynamics based on the incoming signal or use external sidechain detection to resolve masking issues and create intentional space between competing elements. The Smooth to Focused spectrum offers welcome flexibility, letting you preserve natural dynamics when needed or apply surgical precision for aggressive transient control on dense material.

Articulate occupies distinctive territory between standard transient shapers and full multiband compressors. It lacks the comprehensive control of more complex processors, but that simplicity becomes its strength for fast, intuitive mixing decisions. The built-in peak limiter, engineered by the Elevate Mastering Limiter team, handles clipping prevention without sacrificing the carefully shaped dynamics you've dialed in.
Best suited for mixing engineers and producers working across multiple genres - particularly those dealing with complex drums, layered instruments, or crowded arrangements - Articulate excels when you need surgical envelope control without surrendering workflow. The 50 presets and librarian provide useful starting points, though the plugin's real value emerges through experimentation with its four-band approach. For anyone frustrated by traditional transient shapers' limitations or intimidated by multiband compressor complexity, Articulate offers a genuine third path.
