About this plugin
Native Instruments' Session Ukulele delivers a focused and well-executed implementation of three acoustic stringed instruments: soprano and tenor ukuleles plus charango. Rather than attempting comprehensive customization, the plugin prioritizes playability and sonic authenticity through a thoughtfully designed interface centered on 385 strumming and picking patterns.
The core appeal lies in its pattern engine, which uses an improved algorithm to automatically voice chords with natural inversions across the instrument's range. This approach suits producers working quickly, particularly in pop, lo-fi, and indie contexts where ukulele adds textural warmth without demanding deep technical knowledge. The pattern system integrates effectively with DAWs via drag-and-drop functionality, enabling further refinement once exported.

Sonically, the instruments were sampled from hand-built sources in Hawaii and Bolivia, resulting in convincing timbral character. Articulation options include three types of finger vibrato, fret noise modeling, and resonance controls. The microphone modeling system offers useful sonic variation through dynamic and condenser configurations, while the doubling function adds width when needed.
Processing options are practical rather than experimental: delay, reverb, modulation, compression, and a newly added lo-fi effects suite allow targeted refinement without overwhelming the interface. Integration with Native Instruments' Kontrol S-Series keyboards provides hardware control for performance-oriented users.
Session Ukulele occupies a middle ground between bare-bones sample libraries and deep synthesis tools. It excels for producers seeking quick, convincing ukulele parts with moderate editorial control, though those requiring extensive harmonic manipulation or unconventional sound design may find its approach limiting.
