About this plugin
Native Instruments' Marco Polo Drums delivers golden-era hip hop drum programming through the lens of a producer with three decades of credibility in the genre. This Play Series instrument packages sixteen MIDI groove patterns alongside customizable drum sounds, each shaped by the production philosophy that has defined Marco Polo's work with Rakim, Westside Gunn, Talib Kweli, and others.
The sonic character here is distinctly textured rather than pristine. Kicks carry weight and presence without unnecessary processing, snares crack with natural decay, and hi-hats possess the slightly imperfect swing that separates authentic boom bap from synthetic imitation. This comes from Marco's documented approach to crate digging and his preference for samples over synthetic generation, applied here as sound design methodology rather than literal sampling.

What distinguishes Marco Polo Drums from standard drum VSTs is the integration of the artist's macro effects - custom processing chains that enforce tonal consistency across kits. Rather than leaving users to shape sounds from scratch, these macros operate as preset modifiers, allowing real-time control over character without breaking the fundamental sonic intention.
The groove patterns function as genuine starting points for production rather than rigid loops. MIDI drag and drop compatibility across DAWs means patterns integrate seamlessly into existing workflows, staying editable rather than locked. This approach suits producers working in boom bap, trap, or contemporary hip hop who need authentic rhythmic foundation without sacrificing individual creativity.
For engineers and producers seeking drum sounds with established credibility and demonstrable genre expertise, Marco Polo Drums represents straightforward tool design - real sounds, proven methodology, practical workflow.
