About this plugin
The SSi Pro Expander and Gate from Minimal System Group delivers a focused approach to dynamic control through analog modeling, prioritizing clarity over feature bloat. Unlike multiband processors or Swiss Army knife compressors, this plugin isolates the expander and gate functions with straightforward parameter sets, making it suitable for mixing and mastering work where surgical dynamic shaping matters.
The expander section operates inversely to compression, widening dynamic range by increasing signal level above the threshold according to a user-defined ratio. This proves valuable for restoring clarity to muddy recordings or sharpening transient definition on percussion and bass. The gate functions as a hard-gating expander, switching from fully closed to fully open rather than gradually attenuating, making it an efficient tool for removing hum, air noise, and low-level rumble from individual tracks or bus chains.

The analog modeling architecture prioritizes sonic warmth without introducing coloration that would undermine transparency during critical mixing. CPU efficiency remains low, allowing generous plugin instantiation across sessions without compromising system stability - a practical advantage when working on dense arrangements or mastering in real-time monitoring scenarios.
This plugin best serves engineers who prefer dedicated, high-quality tools over bloated processor suites. Windows-only availability limits its user base compared to cross-platform competitors, though the processing quality justifies consideration for DAW-native workflows. Ten included presets provide starting points, though experienced users will find themselves dialing in custom settings for specific material. The SSi Pro occupies a genuine niche rather than claiming universal superiority - appropriate for producers seeking reliable expansion and gating without unnecessary complexity.
