About this plugin
Minimal Audio's STATIC is a distortion and degradation plugin designed to inject grit and textural complexity into digital audio. Built in collaboration with dubstep producers Ternion Sound, the tool applies voltage-controlled saturation and bit-reduction algorithms that favor aggressive harmonic manipulation over transparent coloration. The plugin's core strength lies in its ability to layer multiple degradation stages, allowing users to compound distortion types without sacrificing intelligibility of the underlying signal.
The sonic character reflects hardware synthesis aesthetics - the saturation stages model sampled drum machines and analog gear rather than tube or tape emulation. This results in a particularly effective tool for electronic music production, where STATIC excels at adding weight to thin synths, clarifying muddy bass frequencies through harmonic excitement, and creating the complex overtone structures characteristic of underground bass music. The degradation modes prove equally useful for percussion shaping, capable of transforming clean drum hits into textured, characterful sounds with considerable aggression.

STATIC occupies a distinct position among saturation plugins. While competitors typically prioritize warmth or vintage character, this tool unapologetically prioritizes edge and noise-infused coloration. It's optimally suited for producers working in dubstep, garage, drum and bass, and experimental electronic genres, though experienced engineers working across any style will find practical applications in drum processing and bass enhancement.
The interface remains relatively straightforward despite the plugin's sophisticated underlying architecture, making it accessible for newcomers while offering sufficient depth for meticulous sound design. STATIC represents a genuinely specialized tool rather than a general-purpose utility.
