About this plugin
Klevgrand's Baervaag distills FM synthesis into an accessible single-carrier, single-modulator architecture without sacrificing sonic depth or real-time control. The plugin's core strength lies in its XY pad interface for both oscillators, allowing seamless morphing between sine, square, and PWM waveforms while independently controlling pulse width. This design choice prioritizes workflow efficiency over comprehensive parameter diving, making it particularly suited for producers who need FM character without the learning curve of more complex tools.
The modulator section includes a frequency multiplier for harmonic relationships and relative ADSR envelopes that offset from the carrier's amplitude shape. This relative envelope approach is elegant - keeping sliders centered maintains envelope lockstep, while deviations create evolving timbral movement. FM feedback integration adds grit and harmonic complexity beyond standard two-operator FM, though users should approach it cautiously as modulation amounts scale quickly.

Velocity-responsive attack, volume, and filter modulation provide the dynamic responsiveness essential for expressive performance. The inclusion of high-quality delay and chorus effects alongside the master output knob keeps everything self-contained, reducing bus congestion in mixing sessions.
Sonically, Baervaag occupies middle ground between warm and clinical. Its wobble factor injects analog-style instability without overwhelming the core tone. The 50+ presets offer legitimate sonic territory spanning warm pads to crisp digital bells, suggesting careful sound design consideration.
For mid-level producers exploring FM beyond presets or sound designers needing quick timbral iteration, Baervaag delivers genuinely capable synthesis. It won't replace deeper FM tools for complex algorithmic design, but as a focused, workflow-conscious instrument, it earns its place.
