Product Overview
Synths DX is a sampled instrument library that captures the sonic DNA of nine classic and modern synthesizers, including the Dave Smith OB6, Moog Sub 37, Nord Lead 2, and Yamaha DX7, among others. Rather than attempting to emulate these instruments through synthesis modeling, Karanyi Sounds recorded each patch key-to-key at 24-bit, 48kHz resolution through UAD Apollo converters, then built a ROM sampler-style Kontakt instrument around the resulting material. This approach preserves the tonal complexity and harmonic richness of the hardware originals while keeping CPU overhead minimal.
The design philosophy is deliberately restraint-focused. Minimal post-production processing maintains the organic character of the analog circuits and FM synthesis, while the interface prioritizes practical control over ornamental complexity. The dual-layer sample architecture with modwheel-controlled blending allows subtle tonal variation without requiring deep parameter editing. Custom envelope slots are tailored to each instrument's decay characteristics, lending authenticity to pad sustains and bass releases.
The library excels for film scoring, ambient production, and synthwave work where sophisticated pad textures and bass tones matter. Producers seeking period-accurate hardware sounds without maintaining physical synthesizer collections will find particular value here. The selection spans vintage territory (Oberheim Matrix series, DX7) to contemporary instruments, providing both nostalgic and modern sonic options.
Synths DX occupies a middle ground between comprehensive synth modeling and simple drum kits. It's most compelling for users who prioritize authentic character over tweakability, treating sampled hardware as a finished palette rather than a starting point for extensive sound design.
