About this plugin
AIR Music Technology's Fabric Vintage Matrix is a software synthesizer that recreates the modulation-centric design philosophy of the original 1980s Oberheim Matrix-12. Rather than attempting direct emulation, it interprets the hardware's defining characteristics through the company's Fabric engine, a multi-sample synthesis platform designed for contemporary production workflows.
The instrument's architecture centers on two multi-sample layer oscillators plus a dedicated percussive layer, each with independent filter, envelope, and LFO controls. This layered approach enables the complex, evolving textures the Matrix-12 became known for - particularly its sophisticated pad work and textural depth. The modulation matrix itself allows users to route controllers across multiple parameters simultaneously, creating the kind of organic movement and development that defined '80s synth aesthetics without requiring deep patching knowledge.

Sonically, Fabric Vintage Matrix prioritizes the smooth, analog-like character of the original hardware while integrating modern effects processing and a streamlined UI. This positions it as a practical tool for producers who appreciate vintage synthesis character but value immediate access and DAW integration over deep hands-on patching.
The synthesizer appeals primarily to rock, electronic, and film scoring producers seeking atmospheric textures with built-in movement. It's equally suited to sound designers seeking a starting point for experimentation. Among comparable tools, its strength lies not in authenticity but in striking a balance between vintage inspiration and modern usability - offering the Matrix-12's sonic DNA without its workflow friction.
