About

Product Overview

Tverb is a reverb plugin developed by Eventide in collaboration with Tony Visconti, the legendary engineer behind David Bowie's "Heroes." Rather than merely emulating a classic effect, Tverb reconstructs Visconti's three-microphone vocal recording technique from the 1977 Hansa Studios session, where strategically placed gates on distant mics opened in response to vocal dynamics, creating a responsive spatial effect that evolved with performance intensity.

The plugin operates three independent reverb engines corresponding to Visconti's original mic placement: a close mic with adjustable polar patterns and onboard compression, plus two distant mics whose position within the hall can be manually adjusted or automated to alter reverb character in real time. This architecture allows for genuinely interactive spatial processing rather than static ambience, enabling vocal performances to expand and contract dynamically across the stereo field as dynamics increase.

Technically, Tverb employs Eventide's custom reverb algorithm with independent EQ, diffusion, and decay controls per reverb engine. The two far-mic channels feature linkable post-reverb gates, providing precise control over when ambient information enters the mix and at what rate it recedes, replicating how Visconti's original gates shaped the effect's temporal character.

The plugin excels for vocal tracking where dynamic responsiveness is desired, but also serves well for drums, guitars, or synthesizers benefiting from performance-dependent spatial processing. Among convolution-based competitors, Tverb's algorithmic approach offers greater flexibility and lower CPU overhead while maintaining the characteristic warmth of Hansa's Meistersaal. It represents a genuinely thoughtful instrument rather than a simple reverb utility.
