About this plugin
Eventide's Blackhole stands as a distinctly unconventional reverberator, engineered to prioritize sonic character over acoustic simulation. Rather than modeling real-world spaces, it generates algorithmic ambience with pronounced harmonic coloration and an extended decay envelope that defies natural physics. The reverb's defining characteristic is its soft attack transient response, which allows it to sit gracefully beneath source material without the typical metallic wash associated with algorithmic reverbs. Decay tails are notably rich in harmonic content, sustaining musical resonance well into the fade.
The plug-in excels across a broad frequency spectrum. On guitars and synthesizers, larger size parameters create spacious, pad-like atmospheres suitable for ambient arrangements. Smaller settings prove surprisingly effective on vocals and drums, adding depth without obscuring clarity. The algorithm remains tonally neutral enough for transparent applications while offering enough character to function as a creative tool.

Blackhole's lineage in Eventide's rack-mount processors and Space stompbox has produced a mature, refined algorithm. The native plug-in format finally makes this studio staple accessible without hardware investment. Control structure is straightforward, minimizing learning curve while retaining sufficient depth for experienced sound designers. The extensive preset library, developed by Eventide artists, provides immediate starting points across musical genres.
For mixing engineers seeking dimensional effects beyond conventional spatial processing, Blackhole delivers consistent results. Its particular strength lies in applications where reverb tone matters as much as spatial depth. While not a direct replacement for convolution reverbs or algorithmic emulations of specific rooms, it occupies a valuable space for producers prioritizing musicality and sonic cohesion.
