About this plugin
String Machine resurrects the lush, characterful sound design of classic analog string synthesizers from the 1960s through 1980s, translating sampled waveforms from the ARP Solina, Oberheim OBX, Roland RS-505, and Jupiter 6 into a modern plugin architecture. Rather than modeling these instruments through synthesis, EastWest's approach leverages direct sampling from original hardware, capturing the inherent analog warmth and subtle harmonic complexity that digital emulations often struggle to replicate authentically.
The instrument's most compelling feature is its ensemble chorus section, implemented with three distinct modes that reference the classic thickening effects integral to these vintage units. Beyond chromatic string voices, String Machine integrates modern orchestral elements - brass, woodwinds, and vocal samples - allowing producers to layer contemporary sonics atop retro foundations without sacrificing cohesion. The four color-coded instrument categories provide organizational clarity and encourage intuitive sound design through systematic exploration of available timbral combinations.

String Machine occupies a specific niche alongside competitors like Spectrasonics Omnisphere and Native Instruments Komplete. While less expansive than those platforms, it commits deliberately to its vintage synthesizer thesis, making it genuinely useful for producers working across pop, rock, and hip-hop who seek authentic period textures without the burden of sourcing and operating original hardware. The interface design, deliberately mimicking hardware control layouts, reinforces tactile workflow familiarity rather than exploiting skeuomorphism as mere aesthetic.
For engineers prioritizing sonic authenticity over sonic novelty, String Machine delivers consistent, professional-grade orchestral padding with unmistakable vintage character.
