About this plugin
Hollywood Fantasy Percussion is EastWest Sounds' specialized percussion library designed to address a specific gap in orchestral scoring: acoustic instruments that belong authentically within fantasy and medieval contexts rather than conventional symphonic settings. The plugin delivers three variants each of bodhrans, gran cassas, and large taikos, sampled across multiple dynamic layers and articulations to provide realistic performance flexibility.
The sonic character leans heavily toward the lower and mid frequencies, with particular emphasis on sustained resonance and natural decay. The taikos deliver the expected deep, authoritative low-end punch common to East Asian percussion, while the gran cassas extend traditional orchestral bass drums into more aggressive strike territories. The bodhrans contribute harmonic complexity and tonal warmth - their Celtic heritage makes them particularly valuable for scores requiring cultural specificity without sacrificing orchestral weight.

The library excels in hybrid scoring contexts where traditional percussion feels incongruent with the on-screen world. Rather than forcing conventional timpani or bass drums into fantasy narratives, these instruments provide sonically credible alternatives that strengthen thematic coherence. This approach appeals primarily to film and television composers working in fantasy, historical, and period-piece genres, as well as video game composers requiring contextually appropriate percussion.
Compared to general-purpose orchestral percussion libraries, Hollywood Fantasy Percussion sacrifices some versatility for authenticity and specialization. Its three-instrument focus demands integration with broader percussion tools for comprehensive orchestral work. However, for composers committed to sonic world-building within fantasy narratives, the specificity and sampling quality justify dedicated library space.
