About this plugin
Carbon Electra 2 represents a meaningful step forward for users of the original, introducing refinements that strengthen its position as a synthesizer built explicitly around harmonic constraints. The upgrade centers on enhanced key-awareness throughout the signal chain: Scale Lock now governs oscillator and filter behavior simultaneously, while the sequencer operates in genuine chord mode rather than simple note selection, allowing intuitive construction of inversions and parallel substitutions that remain musically coherent.
The waveterrain oscillator engine remains the synthesis core, but its integration with scale-based modulation creates results that feel less random than traditional wavetable morphing. A harmonic curve tracking across a three-dimensional surface yields timbral evolution that correlates more directly to musical intention. Complementing this, Filter 2 functions as a scale-aware resonant element capable of emphasizing specific scale degrees through cutoff modulation, effectively creating a tuned feedback network when Keytrack engages.

For producers working primarily in electronic music, ambient, or beat-making where harmonic cohesion matters more than sonic surprise, this upgrade addresses real workflow friction. The constraint-based design eliminates the need for constant manual key correction, a particular advantage in live performance or rapid iterative sketching. That said, the philosophy represents a trade-off: those seeking unfiltered sonic exploration or atonal textures will find the scale-locking paradigm limiting rather than liberating.
Carbon Electra 2 occupies a distinct niche between Scaler's harmonic intelligence and conventional synthesis. For existing owners, the upgrade justifies consideration primarily if sequencing workflow or filter musicality drove original frustrations. It's a focused refinement rather than a fundamental reimagining.
