About this plugin
BFD Modern Retro is a drum sample expansion for BFD3 that captures the sonic DNA of 1990s and early 2000s alternative, hip-hop, and rock production. Built on sessions engineered by Chocolate Audio, the pack delivers two meticulously recorded acoustic kits - a 1997 Sonor Designer and late 90s Tama Starclassic - alongside curated snares and a comprehensive cymbal collection from Zildjian, Paiste, Sabian, Ufip, and Turkish manufacturers.
The technical foundation is robust: kicks feature up to 300 samples per articulation recorded through four discrete direct microphones, with both plastic and felt beater variants included. Snares and cymbals similarly offer extensive articulation depth, with parallel versions captured using sticks, hotrods, and brushes. The recording space itself becomes an asset through dual overhead and room microphone channels, providing spatial context without sacrificing punch or clarity.

What distinguishes Modern Retro from period-specific drum libraries is its production versatility. The included presets emphasize pop and rock contexts, but the underlying samples - particularly the Tama kit's crisp attack and the Sonor's woody resonance - prove equally effective in electronic music, indie pop, and genre-blended contemporary production. The hotrod and brush articulations add textural alternatives that extend usability beyond straightforward rhythm patterns.
Engineers seeking authentic 90s tonality without the constraints of sample-rate limitations or dated compression will find Modern Retro a credible alternative to hardware or archival recordings. The kit's expressiveness and mic flexibility reward detailed mixing, making it suitable for both quick sketch work and final masters.
