About this plugin
Have Audio's Bass Recorder samples a period wind instrument with surprising relevance to contemporary scoring and sound design. Capturing 854 samples across the instrument's F2 to G4 range, this Kontakt library documents an instrument historically associated with medieval and Baroque music but recently thrust into modern production workflows following its prominent use in Ludwig Göransson's Mandalorian theme.
The library's architecture reflects serious sampling methodology. Beyond standard sustains with and without vibrato, the collection includes articulations that address the bass recorder's distinctive technical vocabulary: mordents in both directions, frullati effects, various tongue techniques, and key noise captures. The inclusion of multiphonics and mixed technique layers suggests the developers understood that contemporary composers often exploit extended techniques rather than pursue historical authenticity.

Sonically, the bass recorder occupies a specific niche. Its warm, woody character differs markedly from higher recorder variants, with sufficient body to anchor orchestral textures without competing with lower instruments. The special effects and mouthpiece layers provide texture options beyond straight melodic playing, making this useful for sound designers seeking organic tonal coloration.
The library suits film and television composers most directly, particularly those scoring fantasy or period-adjacent material. Game composers working with acoustic instrumentation may find value in the articulation variety. However, producers should recognize this as a specialized tool. The bass recorder's tonal range and aesthetic won't serve every project, and the library's strength lies in detailed authenticity rather than sonic transformation.
