Product Overview
Type X is a meticulous plugin recreation of the dbx 1BX, the single-band dynamic expander that became essential to analog mastering chains and hi-fi playback systems from the late 1970s onward. Rather than merely copying the original's fixed characteristics, AudioThing has thoughtfully extended the concept with modern production flexibility while preserving the sonic signature that made the hardware a classic.
The plugin operates as a wideband expander, increasing separation between quiet and loud material by making soft passages quieter while leaving peaks relatively untouched. This contrasts fundamentally with compression and proves particularly effective on source material that has been heavily processed or compressed during recording. Where traditional dynamics processors reduce dynamic range, Type X restores it.
The implementation adds practical depth beyond the original hardware. A sidechain section with independently adjustable high-pass and low-pass filters allows you to isolate specific frequency ranges that drive expansion, useful for preventing low-frequency rumble or tape hiss from triggering unwanted expansion artifacts. Adjustable attack and release times replace the 1BX's fixed response, giving engineers control over how quickly the expander reacts and recovers.
Type X suits mastering scenarios, vinyl restoration, and broadcast audio enhancement particularly well. It's also valuable for individual tracks where restoring dynamic character could improve definition, especially on heavily compressed vocals or drums. Among modern expansion tools, it remains one of the few options that authentically captures the analog expander aesthetic while offering contemporary control. The sound is transparent when subtly applied, but capable of dramatic enhancement at higher expansion ratios.
