About this plugin
AudioThing's Satellite is a meticulously sampled virtual recreation of the rare Moog Satellite synthesizer, a monophonic preset instrument that occupied an unusual niche in the mid-1970s synthesizer landscape. Originally conceived as an affordable add-on module for electronic organs, the Satellite combined a single voltage-controlled oscillator with modest modulation capabilities and a fixed set of tonal presets, making it more utilitarian than sonic explorer.
This Kontakt-based instrument faithfully captures that design philosophy through 433 samples recorded at 24-bit resolution from an original unit. The plugin includes both tuned and untuned versions, acknowledging the Satellite's characteristic intonation inconsistencies across the keyboard range - a quirk that lends character rather than detraction. The 13 original presets span brass, reed, string, and synth tones, delivering that warm, slightly compressed analog character typical of early Moog designs rather than the pristine clarity of later instruments.

What distinguishes Satellite from broader synthesizer emulations is its specific historical focus and honest implementation. Rather than retrofitting modern conveniences onto a vintage design, AudioThing has preserved the Satellite's essential limitations and sonic personality - qualities that prove surprisingly useful in contemporary production. For engineers seeking organic analog warmth without the flexibility of fully modular synths, or producers interested in period-appropriate tones for retro work, the Satellite offers authentic results. The untuned version particularly appeals to those pursuing lo-fi aesthetics or nostalgic textures.
