About this plugin
Reel To Reel Reels is a tape saturation and effects plugin built around the sonic characteristics of vintage Japanese portable tape recorders, specifically engineered to deliver lo-fi coloration rather than transparent tape modeling. AudioThing has modeled three distinct 1/4" tape formulations and their frequency responses, layering in the characteristic imperfections of consumer-grade machines: harmonic distortion that muddies the midrange, wow and flutter from motor inconsistencies, random level ducking from worn playheads, and the distinctive hiss and motor noise that defined budget tape equipment of that era. The plugin also simulates crosstalk between stereo channels, a natural byproduct of compact recorder design.
Beyond basic saturation, Reels includes a dedicated echo section and a convincing tape start / stop effect that models the gradual pitch-shifting and fade characteristics of analog tape deceleration. The latter feature is particularly useful for creative applications, with adjustable ramp times to customize the effect's character.

The sonic palette here is unmistakably degraded and aggressive. This is appropriate for producers seeking authentic vintage character in hip-hop, lo-fi, psych, or experimental work. It excels at adding textural grit and harmonic weight without pretending toward hi-fi accuracy. For mastering or transparent tracking applications, Reel To Reel Reels would be counterproductive.
Positioned against competitors like Waves J37 or Softube's Tape, Reels occupies a distinctly lo-fi corner of the market. It's most effective as a characterful creative tool rather than a subtle enhancement, and works best on individual tracks or buses where its coloration adds intentional sonic personality.
