About this plugin
Echo Cube faithfully models the Cooper Time Cube, one of analog recording's most unconventional delay systems. Rather than tape or electronic circuits, the original hardware routed audio through coiled tubes where sound propagated through air itself, creating fixed delays of approximately 14ms and 16ms per line. This acoustic approach produced something fundamentally different from contemporary tape echoes or BBD units: a characterful delay with inherent phase artifacts and natural filtering that coloration-conscious engineers sought out across the 1970s and beyond.
AudioThing's plugin recreates this behavior alongside two experimental variants - Garden Hose and Corrugated - that extend the principle into sound design territory. The dual delay architecture provides independent time, feedback, and level controls for each line, with routing modes spanning serial, parallel, ping pong, mono sum, and mid/side processing. This flexibility transforms what was originally a fixed effect into a genuinely versatile tool.

The sonic signature remains the plugin's primary asset. Echo Cube excels at subtle doubling, Haas-type effects, and spatial thickening rather than rhythmic echo work. The acoustic coloration adds dimension without the clinical precision of digital delay or the wow and flutter of tape emulation. This makes it particularly valuable for vocal processing, drum bus enhancement, and adding cohesion to multi-tracked instruments where pristine delay would feel out of place.
For engineers already familiar with the original hardware, this emulation represents genuine convenience. For those discovering the Time Cube concept through software, Echo Cube offers access to a distinctive sound that shaped classic recordings without requiring equipment searches or five-figure restoration costs. Among acoustic delay modeling tools, it remains singular in approach and execution.
