About this plugin
Riffer is a generative MIDI sequencer that synthesizes riffs and patterns through algorithmic combination of pitch, duration, velocity, and density parameters. Rather than operating as a traditional step sequencer, it functions as an intelligent pattern generator capable of producing musically coherent variations within user-defined constraints. The plugin accepts MIDI input from keyboards and controllers to trigger generation, with output suitable for any software instrument or hardware synthesizer accepting MIDI data.
The core workflow involves selecting from 53 included scales, setting pattern length and complexity, then allowing the algorithm to generate unique sequences. Users can lock specific notes or steps to anchor melodic ideas while randomizing others, effectively guiding rather than constraining the generative process. Advanced parameters include motion settings that influence melodic contour, transposition controls, and quantization options alongside shuffle and shift modes for rhythmic variation.

Riffer's technical strength lies in its lightweight architecture and broad plugin format support across VST/VST3, AU, and AAX on both macOS and Windows, including native Apple Silicon optimization. The infinity mode allows endless pattern generation for extended compositional sessions or live performance contexts.
The plugin serves composers seeking rapid ideation tools, electronic producers exploring algorithmic composition, and sound designers requiring generative MIDI material for hardware synthesis. Its 35,000 active user base and decade-long development cycle indicate sustained market viability within the generative music tools category. While similar tools exist, Riffer's combination of accessibility, parameter depth, and consistent updates positions it among the more mature offerings in this specialized segment.
