About this plugin
Audified's U78 Saturator distills analog warmth into a focused plugin designed for producers seeking transparent enhancement rather than aggressive coloration. Built on circuit modeling derived from the company's u78b Compressor, the U78 delivers genuine tube saturation character without the unpredictable nonlinearities that make vintage hardware difficult to control in modern workflows.
The plugin's architecture centers on a straightforward gain structure feeding a modeled saturation circuit. Input gain drives saturation intensity, while the Tone control shapes harmonic content across the spectrum - darker at lower settings, increasingly bright and crystalline at higher values. High and low pass filters positioned before saturation allow frequency-dependent processing, letting you apply character selectively: preserve bass definition while saturating vocals, or isolate midrange presence without harshening upper frequencies. The Mix control maintains phase alignment between dry and wet signals, a practical detail often overlooked in saturation tools but essential for maintaining mix coherence.

Optional automatic output level compensation prevents the typical loudness bloat that accompany saturation, making gain staging transparent. This proves particularly useful in mixing contexts where you're layering saturation across multiple tracks without chasing constant level adjustments.
The U78 occupies practical middle ground - more surgical than colorful saturation plugins, yet characterful enough to justify its presence beyond simple tone shaping. It suits mastering engineers seeking subtle enhancement, mixing engineers wanting controlled saturation on individual tracks, and producers who value flexibility and transparent operation. Among modern saturation tools, the U78 competes on delivering genuine analog circuit behavior without requiring deep parameter diving.
