About this plugin
Arturia's Synthi V is a faithful software emulation of the EMS VCS3 and Synthi AKS, the compact yet architecturally uncompromising analog synthesizers that defined experimental electronic music in the 1970s. Unlike the Minimoog's straightforward signal flow, the EMS designs employed a matrix patchbay for routing, enabling unconventional modulation paths and hybrid timbral combinations that proved essential to Pink Floyd's work and countless electronic pioneers.
The plugin captures the core sonic signature accurately: three voltage-controlled oscillators with cross-modulation capabilities, a resonant multimode filter, and the spring reverb that gave the originals their characteristic spatial quality. The envelope generators respond with the gentle lag and organic character of vintage circuitry rather than clinical digital precision. The matrix patchbay remains the centerpiece, allowing flexible signal routing that encourages experimentation beyond conventional synthesis approaches.

Arturia has augmented the original architecture with contemporary additions including MIDI integration, preset management, and enhanced modulation sources. These enhancements expand the instrument's practical integration into modern DAWs without compromising its character. The filter particularly rewards careful tweaking, exhibiting the subtle self-oscillation and saturation behaviors that make it sonically distinct from more obviously aggressive filter designs.
Synthi V serves producers seeking textural complexity and unconventional timbres rather than straightforward melodic tools. It excels at generating pad textures, sci-fi effects, and modulated drones. Those already familiar with the hardware will appreciate the accuracy. For producers new to the EMS lineage, Synthi V provides genuine access to a historically significant synthesis architecture that remains sonically relevant and genuinely different from mainstream virtual instruments.
