About this plugin
Diode 609 is a software emulation of the 33609 diode-bridge compressor, a mastering-grade processor that defined the sound of countless records since its 1985 introduction. The plugin faithfully captures the harmonic character that made its hardware namesake indispensable on mix buses worldwide, delivering compression with a distinctly musical coloration rather than clinical gain reduction.
The circuit generates pleasing harmonic distortion through its feedback topology, adding weight and presence that sits sources forward in a mix without sacrificing naturalness. This characteristic warmth distinguishes it from VCA and optical designs, making it particularly effective on full mixes where transparency matters but personality doesn't hurt. The compression curve favors musicality over precision, responding gracefully to program material rather than mechanical exactitude.

Antelope's plugin implementation adds practical refinements absent from the original hardware. A high-pass filter with a dedicated preview button lets you shape the compression without affecting the final output, while expanded ratio options including 10:1 and extended recovery times to 200ms broaden its application beyond mix-bus duty into tracking and subgroup work. The independent limiter provides additional safety without sacrificing the compressor's sonic character.
Diode 609 suits engineers seeking the textural qualities of Class A compression gear without its limitations. It excels on drums, vocals, pianos, and especially on stereo sources where glue and cohesion matter. Among diode-bridge emulations, it ranks among the more transparent recreations, capturing both the sonic virtues and operational flexibility of its legendary hardware inspiration. For mix-bus work or sources requiring harmonic enhancement, it remains a first choice.
