About this plugin
XO Expansion: Ultra Bionic extends XLN Audio's XO beat-making platform with 118 meticulously sourced samples derived from Peder Mannerfelt's extensive modular synthesis collection. Rather than generic processed sounds, this expansion captures the idiosyncratic character of analog gear - specifically Mannerfelt's late 1960s EMS SYNTHI, vintage 8-bit synthesizers, and bespoke 90s hardware pushed through deliberately degraded signal chains.
The sonic palette skews toward industrial textures and glitchy percussion rather than polished drum hits. Expect brittle hi-hats rendered from circuit feedback, bass frequencies extracted from unconventional sources like recorded car doors and effect-saturated impact sounds, and the kind of sub-bass definition that only emerges from properly maintained analog oscillators. The SYNTHI contributions yield particularly unpredictable results - decades of accumulated dust and performance wear have imparted a distinctly unstable character to the output, with harmonic drift and intermittent artifacts that resist quantization.

Ultra Bionic suits producers working in experimental techno, IDM, and breakbeat genres where sonic imperfection functions as compositional material rather than a liability. The samples integrate seamlessly within XO's grid-based workflow, allowing producers to layer Mannerfelt's textures alongside their own recordings and samples. For those seeking genuinely unconventional percussion sources or interested in how analog equipment deterioration shapes timbre, this expansion offers considerably more depth than typical drum sample packs. The editing capabilities within XO enable further manipulation, though these sounds benefit from minimal processing - their character derives from source material authenticity rather than design philosophy.
