About this plugin
XLN Audio's XO Expansion: Preheated, curated by producer J3PO, delivers a focused toolkit for beat-makers working across hip-hop, lo-fi, and jazz-influenced electronic music. The expansion comprises 80 sequencer-ready drum grooves and 147 one-shot samples designed for use within XO's rhythm engine, where individual drum hits can be swapped or layered to reshape patterns without breaking workflow.
The sonic palette emphasizes textural depth over pristine clarity. Characterized by vintage breaks with lo-fi coloration, jazzy chord hits, and organic percussion textures, the samples carry deliberate crackle and analog character suited to producers seeking immediate sonic warmth. This approach contrasts with clinical drum libraries, instead favoring samples that encourage exploration rather than demanding extensive processing.

The core strength lies in XO's sequencer integration. Rather than mining through unorganized sample pools, users audition grooves within a functional pattern editor, then systematically swap components. This structure accelerates the iterative stage of production where direction remains uncertain, making it particularly valuable for lo-fi and hip-hop producers who prioritize rapid prototyping over sample curation.
Preheated works best for producers already invested in XO or contemplating purchase. The expansion assumes familiarity with XO's architecture and sample replacement workflow. For producers working in DAWs outside XO's ecosystem or preferring traditional sampler workflows, this remains platform-dependent.
Among contemporary beat expansion packs, Preheated distinguishes itself through functional integration rather than raw sample count. It prioritizes usability and sonic coherence, positioning itself as a legitimate alternative to algorithmic beat generation or extensive digger work.
