About this plugin
XLN Audio's Memory Card expansion for the XO sequencer delivers a curated collection of samples and beat patterns assembled by producer Kaelin Ellis. The package contains approximately 100 loops, one-shots, and drum hits sourced and processed through Ellis's characteristic production methodology, alongside pre-configured sequences that demonstrate his approach to pocket-playing and groove manipulation.
The sonic palette reflects Ellis's documented influences - the sample-chopping sensibilities of J Dilla and Madlib combined with contemporary beat design. Sounds trend toward lo-fi aesthetics with intentional degradation, swing quantization, and textural layering that prioritizes rhythmic pocket over sterile precision. Drum sounds exhibit natural decay and vinyl-adjacent character, while melodic samples lean into jazz voicings, soul loops, and funk phrases. The overall timbre sits deliberately off-center from commercial beatmaking templates.

Memory Card functions best as a reference tool and inspiration source rather than a replacement for foundational drum kit libraries. Experienced producers working in hip-hop, electronic, and genre-hybrid contexts will find the sample selection most immediately applicable. The included sequences reveal Ellis's structural approach to arrangement and loop manipulation within XO's interface, offering practical insight into his workflow philosophy.
Among XLN's artist expansion offerings, Memory Card occupies a specific niche - it prioritizes groovy source material over comprehensive production tooling. Users seeking comprehensive production libraries may require supplementary packs. However, for producers already familiar with Ellis's aesthetic or those pursuing beat-making approaches rooted in swing-heavy, character-driven sample work, the expansion provides genuine creative utility and technical reference value.
