About this plugin
XLN Audio's Boutique Mallets ADpak represents a thoughtful approach to mallet percussion sampling, capturing a handcrafted Wacco maple kit recorded in Soundtrade Studios' spacious live room. The expansion distinguishes itself through dual playing techniques - both felt mallets and sticks are recorded across the kit, providing genuine tonal variation that responds authentically to articulation choices rather than relying on velocity-based layering alone.
The sonic character leans distinctly toward warmth and body. The extra-thick drum heads and natural satin finish yield a dense, rounded attack with considerable sustain - qualities that translate well into orchestral mockups, film scoring, and organic electronic productions where separation from synths is paramount. The choice of Meinl Byzance cymbals, specifically their extra-thin variants, reinforces this aesthetic with a dry, sophisticated shimmer that avoids the bright brittleness of cheaper sampled cymbals.

Recording methodology proves crucial here. Capturing both snares-on and snares-off configurations for the 14x6" Hip Custom snares provides legitimate tonal flexibility without forcing users into inconvenient workarounds. The four tom variants - two sizes with high and low tuning options - allow for natural-sounding fills and transitions within the same sample set.
Boutique Mallets suits producers working in cinematic composition, art music, and genre-agnostic productions valuing organic textures. It occupies a specific niche: warmer and more deliberately crafted than general-purpose drum libraries, yet more playable than single-kit specialty samples. For engineers seeking mallet percussion that maintains character and musicality rather than aspiring toward clinical accuracy, this ADpak delivers consistent, usable results.
