About this plugin
Waves' PuigTec bundle delivers digital emulations of two of mastering's most revered tools: the Pultec EQP-1A and MEQ-5. Based on units from Jack Joseph Puig's personal collection, these plugins capture the sonic signature that made Pultec passive equalizers essential across decades of professional recording.
The EQP-1A handles low and high frequency shaping with a distinctive characteristic - its simultaneous cut and boost topology allows you to tighten lows while adding presence at the same frequency, a technique that became legendary for punching up bass and drum tracks. The shelving curves are gentle and musical rather than surgical, reflecting passive EQ's inherent smoothness. The MEQ-5 provides three overlapping midrange bands, each with its own frequency selection and cut/boost capability, making it ideal for sculpting vocal clarity, guitar tone, or synth character without the clinical precision that can mark modern digital EQs.

The emulation prioritizes the transparent, warm character of passive circuitry. Rather than aggressively reshaping audio, these tools work with material, enhancing what's already there. This makes them equally valuable during mix balancing and mastering, where maintaining sonic integrity matters as much as tonal adjustment.
PuigTec suits engineers accustomed to passive EQ's philosophy - those seeking natural-sounding tone shaping rather than transparent linear correction. While newer digital equalizers offer greater frequency resolution and surgical control, PuigTec's strength lies in its intentional coloration and musical approach. For mix bus processing, vocal enhancement, or capturing that sought-after vintage warmth, these emulations remain competitive with boutique alternatives.
