Waves' MV2 addresses a genuine gap in standard compression architecture by combining upward and downward compression in a single, elegantly designed interface. Rather than forcing engineers into workarounds with multiple plugins, the MV2 handles two distinct problems simultaneously: controlling peaks while lifting quieter material.

The technical approach is straightforward. Below a set threshold, the plugin compresses upward, amplifying low-level signals without affecting peaks. Above the threshold, traditional downward compression engages. This dual-action design proves particularly valuable on sources with inconsistent dynamics - vocal recordings with significant variation between whispered and belted passages, drums recorded with pronounced room ambience where the ambience sits well below peak transients, or undermiked instruments where proximity to the source created uneven levels.
