About this plugin
Waves' IR1 is a convolution reverb plugin built on a straightforward but effective principle: impulse responses from real acoustic spaces deliver more convincing spatial character than algorithmic reverbs can generate. With over 2,000 impulses spanning concert halls, studios, churches, vehicles, and outdoor locations, the library covers both conventional recording scenarios and textural edge cases that justify keeping the plugin loaded.
The core strength lies in its impulse collection quality. Sourced using professional field recording techniques, these responses avoid the dated, thin character that plagued earlier convolution tools. Whether you need the natural decay of the Sydney Opera House or the intimate slap of a stairwell, the sound is consistently usable without excessive processing. The plugin also includes several classic hardware reverb impulses, making it serviceable for vintage tone recreation.

Implementation is pragmatic. Four operational modes (mono, mono-to-stereo, stereo, and efficient stereo) balance CPU load with sonic demands. Parameter editing lets you adjust pre-delay, decay time, and envelope shape, though these controls remain secondary to the impulse selection itself. The ability to import custom WAV impulses and generate your own via included sweep files extends the tool's utility for sound designers.
IR1 occupies a middle ground between premium convolution options and basic reverb plugins. It's most effective for mixing engineers needing reliable, characterful spaces without the complexity of more elaborate convolution systems. The library's breadth makes it particularly valuable for post-production and film scoring work, where specific acoustic environments matter. For electronic music production, results depend entirely on your impulse selection strategy.
