About this plugin
CLA Unplugged addresses a fundamental challenge in mixing: making acoustic instruments sound naturally integrated rather than isolated or thin. Designed by Chris Lord-Alge in collaboration with Waves, the plugin bundles six processing stages - two reverbs, delay, compression, and parametric EQ - into a single insert channel.
The reverb architecture forms the plugin's core. Rather than offering a single algorithm, CLA Unplugged provides two distinct reverb engines, each with adjustable pre-delay, allowing you to layer complementary ambiance colors. This dual-reverb approach lets engineers craft complex spatial textures without routing to parallel buses. The delay section syncs to host tempo, making rhythmic echo integration straightforward for tempo-dependent material.

The EQ curves are specifically voiced for acoustic sources. Rather than neutral shelving, the bass and treble controls follow contours optimized for instruments like piano, strings, and acoustic guitar. The compression stage is transparent enough to maintain natural dynamics while adding cohesion and presence when needed.
CLA Unplugged occupies a deliberate niche: it's an all-in-one solution for a specific task rather than a general effects powerhouse. The preset architecture and limited control set make it most valuable for engineers seeking quick, reliable results on acoustic material rather than those building highly customized chains. Among comparable tools, it distinguishes itself through Lord-Alge's particular tuning philosophy and the pre-delay feature on both reverbs, which addresses phase and timing issues common in acoustic mixing.
