Product Overview
The CLA-2A is Waves' digital emulation of the Teletronix LA-2A, the electro-optical compressor that defined the sound of recorded vocals and became an industry standard across five decades of music production. This plugin models Chris Lord-Alge's personal vintage unit, capturing both the electrical behavior and the subtle harmonic characteristics that made the original hardware so musically transparent even under aggressive gain reduction.
The core advantage of optical compression lies in its inherently musical response. Rather than responding to input levels with mechanical precision, the LA-2A's light-dependent circuit creates gradual, natural-sounding gain changes that preserve transient definition while taming peaks. Attack and release times are fixed but carefully chosen - approximately 60ms for attack and program-dependent release that typically falls between 500ms and several seconds. This design philosophy works exceptionally well on vocals, where you need control without audible pumping or artifacts.
The plugin includes both Compress and Limiter modes, with the limiter offering hard ceiling protection useful for bass and drums. The tube emulation adds subtle harmonic warmth through saturation, contributing to the unit's characteristic silky quality. A mix control enables parallel compression, and the sidechain frequency filter allows you to compress based on specific frequency ranges rather than broadband input.
For engineers accustomed to working with dynamic, expressive sources like lead vocals or bass guitar, the CLA-2A offers genuine sonic advantages over modern VCA or FET designs. Its fixed response times eliminate decision paralysis, and its forgiving nature rewards both conservative and heavy-handed settings with professional results. Zero latency makes it equally viable for mixing and live applications.
