About this plugin
Waves' emulation of the API 2500 delivers the sonic signature of one of the most widely deployed bus compressors in professional studios. Built on VCA topology, this plugin handles the dual role of transparent glue and aggressive punch depending on how you configure it, making it unusually versatile across sources from individual tracks to full mixes.
The core architecture offers genuine choices in compression character. The selectable feedback or feedforward topology shifts how the compressor responds to peaks, while seven attack options ranging from 0.03ms to 30ms accommodate everything from transparent leveling to aggressive transient control. The variable knee lets you dial between hard-knee clamping and softer, more musical compression curves. An infinity:1 ratio adds true limiting capability alongside standard compression ratios.

What distinguishes the 2500 in practice is the Thrust control, API's proprietary enhancement that adds harmonic weight and bass presence - particularly effective on drums and low-end sources where other compressors might thin the tone. The Mix control enables parallel compression without leaving the plugin, useful for maintaining attack definition while building thickness underneath. Stereo linking scales from 50% to 100%, and the ability to tie linkage to specific frequency ranges adds surgical precision to group and bus applications.
This plugin has become essential for modern hip hop, pop, and electronic music producers who value the characteristic punch it imparts. Among emulations of classic bus compressors, it strikes an effective balance between accuracy and usability, making it equally at home on individual bass tracks or stereo masters.
