About this plugin
Vintage Strings captures the distinctive character of 1960s and 1970s soul, funk, and R&B string arrangements with considerable authenticity. Built on multitrack recordings of a six-piece violin section tracked through vintage Neumann U-87 and Royer ribbon microphones into an SSL console, the instrument prioritizes sonic personality over classical perfection. The decision to record in a modest, acoustically dry studio rather than a concert hall proves crucial - the resulting tone avoids the pristine clarity of modern orchestral samples, instead delivering the slightly compressed, characterful sound of period soul and Motown sessions.
The plugin's architecture includes three distinct section types, with the 2VLN patches proving particularly useful for tight arrangements that still convey fullness without dominating the mix. This approach mirrors the practical constraints of vintage recordings, where smaller ensembles often created the string textures that defined the era's signature sound. The inclusion of multiple microphone perspectives - close, room, and positioned layers - allows users to shape the balance between clarity and ambience according to their needs.

Vintage Strings works as a Kontakt 5 instrument, requiring the full version of Native Instruments' sampler. The plugin suits producers seeking authentic period textures for soul, funk, or R&B productions, as well as those working on contemporary tracks that benefit from vintage string character rather than pristine orchestral polish. While specialized in its scope, it delivers convincingly on its specific brief - capturing not just the sound but the performance aesthetic of classic string sections, imperfections included.
