About this plugin
Universal Audio's Fairchild Tube Limiter Collection represents the most rigorous digital emulation of these legendary compressors to date. Based on circuit modeling of Ocean Way Studios' reference hardware units, the plugin captures what decades of studio use has proven: the Fairchild 670 and 660 deliver a distinctive form of compression that remains difficult to replicate or replace.
The sonic character stems from the original tube amplifier and transformer topology. Rather than transparent gain reduction, the Fairchild imparts a subtle harmonic coloration that engineers often describe as "glow" - a desirable interaction between the compression stages and the tube circuitry that shapes tone even when gain reduction is minimal. This makes the plugin useful for sources where you want tonal enhancement alongside dynamic control, particularly lead vocals, drums, and stereo bus processing.

UA's implementation improves upon their 2004 Legacy version by refining time constants and gain reduction curves while modeling the complete signal path. The addition of a wet/dry mix control enables parallel compression workflows, allowing you to blend unprocessed and compressed signals for added density without losing transient articulation.
For mixing engineers accustomed to hardware Fairchilds or seeking their characteristic sound, this plugin is the practical choice. It works well on sources where subtle coloration matters more than surgical dynamic control. The steep pricing reflects both the development effort and the plugin's position as the closest alternative to owning actual vintage units, making it primarily suited for professional studios and discerning engineers unwilling to compromise on compression character.
