About this plugin
StageBox represents a deliberate departure from the generalist approach that has long dominated live performance software. Rather than adapting a DAW or DJ tool for keyboard use, Tracktion engineered this plugin host specifically around the workflow demands of professional keyboardists working in real time.
The core functionality centers on assembling custom rigs from VST3 and Audio Units plugins, then organizing them into songs and setlists that respond to the unpredictability of live performance. The interface prioritizes visibility and speed - you see only what's relevant at any given moment, and rearranging your set requires nothing more than dragging songs into new positions. Split and layering capabilities let you build complex multitimbral arrangements while maintaining the ability to route individual layers to separate hardware outputs, a critical requirement for keyboardists integrating StageBox into larger rigs.

What distinguishes StageBox from competitors like GigPerformer and Mainstage is its designer's perspective. Created by Matt Robertson, a Grammy-nominated composer and musical director, the software reflects actual stage requirements rather than theoretical ones. The MIDI controller integration acknowledges that most gigging players rely on dedicated control surfaces, and the emphasis on quick sound switching and minimal latency reflects real performance pressure.
For touring musicians and session players who've grown frustrated with hardware stage piano limitations, StageBox offers genuine liberation - access to your complete plugin library, seamless setlist adaptation, and the processing horsepower of modern laptops. It's not a universal solution, but for its intended audience, it addresses genuine gaps in existing tools.
