About this plugin
The Model 5000 represents a thoughtful synthesis of two distinct compression lineages: the aggressive low-end character of American VCA design and the musical ratio curves of British console compression. This hybrid approach yields a genuinely useful tool that transcends simple genre pigeonholing.
The distinguishing feature is the "Knock" circuit, derived from the American compressor topology, which enables aggressive sidechain filtering in the low frequencies while simultaneously introducing a controlled lift to the bottom end. This counter-intuitive pairing solves a persistent mixing problem: achieving punch and presence without sacrificing low-end density. On drums, the effect is particularly compelling, allowing kick and bass to maintain authority while the snare and toms punch through with clarity. On full mixes, it imparts a cohesive weight that feels intentional rather than accidental.

The British-derived ratio and time constant parameters ensure smooth, musical compression that doesn't announce itself until pushed. The included TransX transformer emulation adds measurable harmonic content, functioning as both saturation and subtle colorization depending on input gain staging. With up to 8x oversampling, aliasing artifacts remain inaudible even under extreme settings.
This tool suits mastering engineers, drum producers, and mix engineers working across rock, hip-hop, and electronic music. It excels on sources requiring simultaneous control and presence enhancement. While specialized compressors exist for specific tasks, the Model 5000's flexibility and sonic coherence make it a genuinely competent all-purpose VCA that doesn't compromise on character. It's a credible competitor in a crowded category, distinguished by its thoughtful engineering and practical low-end management.
