Product Overview
FireChild is Tone Empire's emulation of the vari-mu compressor, a broadcast-era workhorse that shaped professional recording for decades. Rather than routing audio to a separate compression circuit, vari-mu designs use vacuum tubes as variable resistors in the signal path itself, producing compression characteristics fundamentally different from modern optical or FET designs. FireChild captures this through dynamic convolution sampling of original 1950s hardware, preserving the nonlinear behavior that occurs across multiple gain stages and compression levels.
The plugin offers four distinct models: three tube variants (A, B, C) and a transparent "clean" mode. Each tube model responds differently to input drive, allowing users to explore saturation colors without triggering compression - useful for coloration independent of dynamic control. The Bias control further shapes harmonic content. Six release modes, sampled from units with varying component tolerances and tube wear states, provide tonal variety rarely found in single-model emulations. A Knee control adds flexibility in compression curve shaping.
Beyond emulation accuracy, FireChild includes modern conveniences: a full sidechain section with steep high and low-pass filters (24dB/octave), adjustable sidechain gain, and a wet/dry mix control for parallel compression. These additions make the plugin practical for contemporary mixing without sacrificing the original's character.
FireChild suits mastering chains, individual track processing, and situations where subtle coloration paired with predictable limiting is needed. It's particularly valuable for engineers seeking the smooth, musically transparent compression of broadcast limiters without the inherent limitations or maintenance requirements of original hardware.
