About this plugin
KLANG's Black Wood Flow represents a methodical approach to orchestral sound design, isolating the clarinet's softest expressive range through both recording technique and processing. Rather than capturing the instrument's conventional register, KLANG documented the clarinet played with minimal air pressure and subdued articulation, then processed the results through their KLANG Engine to emphasize harmonic purity and sustain characteristics.
The resulting plugin excels at generating sustained pad textures with organic flutter and breath-like modulation. Unlike synthesized alternatives, Black Wood Flow retains the microtonality and timbral inconsistencies inherent to acoustic reed instruments, making it particularly effective for ambient composition, film scoring, and experimental electronic work where authenticity and unpredictability matter equally.

Sonically, the instrument favors the upper harmonics of a clarinet's woody fundamental, producing a distinctly muted, almost underwater quality that resists harshness regardless of velocity or modulation. This makes it reliable for sustained passages without requiring heavy filtering or dynamic control. The clarity of individual grains becomes apparent at lower volumes, while layering reveals surprising depth.
Black Wood Flow occupies a specific niche within orchestral plugin libraries. It's neither a comprehensive clarinet emulation nor a conventional effect processor, but rather a refined sound object designed for texturists. Producers accustomed to Spitfire's snapshot approach or East West's multi-sampled libraries may find its single-articulation limitation restrictive; however, for those seeking a highly defined sonic character with genuine acoustic properties, it delivers genuine utility and aesthetic distinction.
