About this plugin
Soundiron's Artillery Shell Cello stands as a genuinely unconventional addition to the virtual instrument landscape, translating an acoustically improbable physical design into a compelling digital resource. The source instrument - an actual artillery shell body fitted with cello hardware and topped with a contact-miked combat helmet - produces a distinctly metallic, shimmering resonance that occupies sonic territory between traditional strings and industrial percussion.
The plugin captures this acoustic anomaly through dual recording methodology: large diaphragm condenser microphones documented the natural shell resonance while a contact pickup on the helmet assembly captured the direct mechanical vibrations. This dual-source approach grants producers access to both the diffuse ambient character and the tight, percussive attack inherent to the instrument's construction.

Technically, the library delivers comprehensive chromatic sampling across articulations including dynamic sustains, glissandi, and true legato. The expression engine provides modular controls over crescendos, sforzandos, and swells, alongside specialized techniques that leverage the instrument's unique tonal properties. The interface balances accessibility with depth, offering straightforward performance parameters while accommodating granular sound-shaping for those requiring surgical control.
This tool serves experimentally-minded composers and sound designers most effectively, particularly those working within contemporary classical, avant-garde, or electroacoustic contexts. While its tonal signature remains distinctly unconventional, the robust articulation set and expression controls enable integration into conventional orchestral arrangements when the metallic edge serves compositional intent. Among specialty string instruments in the digital realm, Artillery Shell Cello occupies a singular niche, delivering genuine sonic innovation rather than incremental variation.
